Local government reorganisation

From April 1st 2023 North Yorkshire Council will be the local authority which covers Craven and the rest of North Yorkshire, with the exception of the City of York.

The County Council will no longer exist, nor will Craven District Council. We will have 9 Councillors representing our area. These are listed here

This is because a 30-year devolution deal for York and North Yorkshire has been agreed with the government. It offered an investment fund with a condition that North Yorkshire becomes a unitary authority. Previously, since 1974, the area has had a two-tier authority – a County Council with seven District Councils. York was a unitary city before and will run in tandem with the new North Yorkshire Council.

In May 2024 there will be an election for a Mayor for the whole of North Yorkshire including the City of York.
